MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 22, 2014) â€" Sophomore
Rebecca Buchanan answered a late goal with a game-tying goal in the 90th minute, but poor defense late in the match doomed the Milligan College women's soccer team to a 4-3, double-overtime loss to Union College in Appalachian Athletic Conference action Wednesday night in the Buffaloes home finale.
ÂÂ
Milligan, despite holding a 2-1 second-half lead, surrendered three goals in the final 16 minutes of the game, dropping its record to 4-8-2 (3-4-2 AAC). Union improved to 6-7 (2-6 AAC).
ÂÂ
Buchanan's goal, one that she scored from roughly 30 yards out on a gorgeous strike from the right side, came 55 seconds after Union midfielder Payten Walters' 89th-minute, go-ahead goal and 55 seconds prior to the end of regulation. It also marked the second time in the match Milligan provided an immediate answer to a Union goal as
Brittany Davis had a similar result at the start of the second half.
ÂÂ
With the lead 1-0 thanks to a goal from
Taylor Hatmaker midway through the first half, Union's Aline Dalmedico equalized in the 56th minute. Davis, however, responded to that goal 17 seconds later by sneaking through the Union defense and finding a breakaway opportunity that gave Milligan the lead back, 2-1.
ÂÂ
Milligan's lead would last until the 85th minute when Union's Sharika Ingram, following a failed clearance on Milligan's defensive end, took a loose ball that had caromed off the post and put it into the back of the net to level the match. Three and a half minutes later, a Walters free kick, which was intended to be a crossing pass into the penalty area, ended up sailing right past all awaiting parties and into the net for the go-ahead goal.
ÂÂ
Ingram scored the match-winning golden goal 28 seconds into the second overtime period.
ÂÂ
Hatmaker's early goal, her second of the season, was scored after she came up with a loose ball in the box and punched a low shot between the legs of Union goalkeeper Kendall Ellington in the 30th minute. Hatmaker had a chance to double Milligan's 2-1 lead partway through the second half as she turned on a close-range shot that Ellington pushed to the side for a corner kick.
ÂÂ
Hatmaker accounted for five of Milligan's 16 shots in the contest, while Buchanan had six. Union's Dalmedico took 12 of the Bulldogs 20 shots and put three on frame. Ingram took five shots, including missing one off the crossbar a minute and a half into the contest. Four of Ingram's shots were put on frame, and two of them went for a goal.
ÂÂ
Ellington ended the match with six saves, and
Charlotte Stephens had four.
ÂÂ
Milligan will be back on Anglin Field on Saturday in a matchup with the alumni team as part of the festivities for homecoming weekend. The final regular season match for Milligan will then be on the road, Tuesday, Oct. 28 against Tennessee Wesleyan College (7-7-1, 4-3 AAC).
