Women's soccer makes shots count in win over Bluefield, 2-0

BLUEFIELD, Va. (Oct. 3, 2014) â€" Tremendous defense and precision striking helped lead the Milligan College women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Bluefield College Friday night.

Milligan (4-5, 3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) has won three straight conference games with the win over Bluefield (0-8-1, 0-8-1 AAC), allowing them to move into a three-way tie for second in the AAC. They are only half a game behind St. Andrews University (6-1-1, 2-0-1 AAC) who currently holds first place.

Defense was the name of the game Friday night, as neither team made more than three shots per period, but the Buffaloes made their shots count, scoring on half of their shots on goal.

As the first half drew to a close, a corner kick from Christine Hardin became the opportunity the Buffs needed to take the lead. With less than two minutes remaining in the half, Kyler Williams took advantage of the momentary confusion caused by the loose ball and fired it into goal to send the Buffs into the half with the lead.

During the 67th minute, Sami Joy made the first shot in the second half for the Buffs, and the ball sailed from midfield in over the keeper's head to give the Buffs a decisive 2-0 lead.

The Rams sent in two more shots in the game, but a save from Charlotte Stephens and a block by Joy stopped both attempts at a rally.

Overall the Buffs made five shots in the game with four being on goal. Kyler Williams led the Buffs with two shots on goal and a goal.

Stephens stopped both shots on goal by the Rams, giving her two saves on the evening.

The Buffs continue conference action against Montreat College at home on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be provided online at milliganbuffs.com.
