MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Nov. 15, 2014) â€" A career night for
Chelsey Weddle helped to give the Milligan College women's basketball team its first win of the season against St. Andrews University, 63-49, on Saturday evening.
ÂÂ
Milligan moved to 1-4 overall, while also evening its standing in the Appalachian Athletic Conference to 1-1. The win over St. Andrews came at a pivotal time for the Buffs as they are entering a stretch of five-straight conference games, separated only by one nonconference matchup against St. Catharine College on Dec. 1, who defeated the Buffs earlier this year 59-54.
ÂÂ
It was the Milligan's strong presence behind the arc that boosted them early in the game. After falling behind 5-0, back-to-back threes from Weddle and
Callie Cox put Milligan in the lead, and they never looked back from there. Within seven minutes, the Buffs extended their lead to nine, and as Milligan went to the locker room at the half, they led by more than double the Lady Knights score (33-13), shooting 6-for-16 from the 3-point line.
ÂÂ
But the game wasn't over yet. Though the Lady Knights had been held to only five made field goals in the first half, they started a rally in the second half that included an 18-6 run which brought the score to 44-33 with just under eight minutes remaining.
ÂÂ
Eleven was the magic number though, as the Buffs never watched their lead drop below that line for the rest of the game. Milligan missed only one free throw in the final two minutes, and with another two points in the paint from Weddle, the Buffs took home their first victory of the season by 14 points.
ÂÂ
Weddle, who led the Buffs in rebounds and points, had already earned her double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds within the first half, and within five minutes of the second half, she had set a new career high in rebounds. She finished the game with 17 points and 15 rebounds, adding three to her original high of 12 which she set against Point University on Nov. 23 last season.
ÂÂ
Hayley Wyrick and
Lindsee Price also broke into the double digits with scoring, knocking down 12 and 11 points respectively, and
Courtney Wilson came down with 14 rebounds against the Lady Knights.
ÂÂ
Milligan returns back to the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Nov. 19 for a women's and men's doubleheader against Tennessee Wesleyan College. Tip-off for the women is set for 5:30 p.m., and the men will follow no earlier than 7:30 p.m. Tennessee Wesleyan's men were tabbed to finish second this season in the AAC. The women were tabbed to win it and currently rank No. 22.
