CENTRAL, S.C. (Feb. 18, 2014) â€" Everything came together nicely for Milligan College's baseball team on the road Tuesday as the Buffaloes topped Southern Wesleyan University 5-1.
ÂÂ
Milligan (3-2) starting pitcher
Ethan Fleenor combined with five relievers to strike out 11 and allow just six hits while
Luke Kirk provided the eventual game-winning hit on a two-out single in the third. It was the Buffaloes third straight victory.
ÂÂ
Fleenor and
Tyler Wilson struck out five on their own (in two innings apiece) and didn't allow a man on base until the bottom of the third. By then, Kirk had already given the Buffs a 2-0 lead.
ÂÂ
Milligan added three insurance runs in the ninth.
Ernesto Fernandez drove in two of them on a single to right after Southern Wesleyan chose to intentionally pass Kirk with two out and runners on second and third.
ÂÂ
Kirk finished the game 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBIs, and a run. Fernandez was 1-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
ÂÂ
Corey McPherson was the only Buffalo with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-5 with a run.
ÂÂ
Southern Wesleyan's Tyler Bice led the Warriors with a 2-for-4 effort. Tyler Lollis drove in the team's only run.
ÂÂ
Milligan will hit the road for scenic Lookout Mountain, Ga., Friday and Saturday for a three-game set with the Scots of Covenant College. Friday's single game will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 12 p.m. Milligan returns to Anglin Field March 8.
