Defense comes up big in Aubrey's 400th win

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 5, 2014) â€" Milligan College head women's basketball coach Rich Aubrey won his 400th career game, and the Buffalo defense held Truett-McConnell to a season-low 16 points in the first half en route to a 61-44 victory in AAC women's basketball action Wednesday night at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

Milligan improved to 15-9 (11-5 AAC) and will face Bryan College in a battle for third place at home on Saturday. TMC dropped to 8-11 (6-8 AAC).

Aubrey, who won all 400 games during his 21 seasons as the head coach at Milligan, became the 10th coach in the history of NAIA Division II to reach the milestone. His overall record improved to 400-272 (59.5%).

Aubrey has produced nine 20-win teams and two 30-win teams during his tenure. He advanced the women's basketball program to seven regular season conference championships, three conference tournament titles, and four consecutive NAIA national tournament berths (1997-2000).

Coach Aubrey was the conference coach of the year nine times and won the region Champion of Character award in 2006. In 2013, he won the NAIA's national Coach of Character.

Hayley Wyrick led the Buffaloes on offense Wednesday night with 23 points, but defense was the key in the victory, and no one's defensive presence was better felt than Chelsey Weddle's. Weddle scored only five points but kept TMC's leading scorer (Rhandee Haskett , 14.2) to six points on 2-of-9 shooting. The junior also took three charges and had nine boards on the defensive end.

Weddle finished with five points and a game-high 11 total rebounds while adding two steals and a blocked shot.

Although TMC led all rebounds (43-36), Milligan took better care of the ball (23-14 in turnovers) and shot with better accuracy. The Buffs were 21-of-59 (35.6%) from the field in the contest and held the Lady Bears to 15-of-52 (28.8%)

From the free throw line, TMC hit 10-of-12 shots. Helen Simoes led TMC scorers with 16 points and eight rebounds while Rhandee Haskett scored six and took 10 rebounds.

The Buffaloes will be joined by Bryan College (16-8, 11-4 AAC) in the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Saturday Feb. 8. Tip off will be at 1 p.m.
