WEST POINT, Ga. (March 30, 2014) â€"
Edwin Soto scored to give the Milligan College baseball team the lead in the top of the 14th inning of the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Point University, but the Buffaloes were swept by the Skyhawks 7-6 and 7-1 in AAC action.
ÂÂ
It was the longest game for Milligan (15-11, 7-7 AAC) since losing a 16-inning affair to Carson Newman in 2004. Point won the series and improved to 17-17 (5-9 AAC).
ÂÂ
Soto reached on an infield hit to lead off the 14th inning and came around to score on a two-out single by
Sam Tarlton three batters later. Soto's run represented the first scoring for either team since two were away in the sixth, and it looked to be all the Buffs needed to secure their fourth straight victory until the Skyhawks rallied in the bottom half.
ÂÂ
Point took advantage of a pair of walks, an infield single, an error, and a hit batter to plate two runs and walk off with the game one victory.
ÂÂ
Soto was 2-for-6 with two runs, and
Luke Kirk was 3-for-7 with an RBI and a run to lead the Buffs in the series opener.
ÂÂ
Justin Freeman (1-1) was saddled the loss, having given up two unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning of work.
ÂÂ
Game two (7-1, Point)
ÂÂ
Milligan got on the board right off the bat in game two as
Corey McPherson singled through the left side on the first pitch of the game, and Kirk followed by taking a 3-1 pitch to deep left-center for a run-scoring double. From there, Point starting pitcher Dylan Griffin would settle down and hold the Buffs to two hits and no runs while striking out 13 over the next seven innings. It was Griffin's first complete game of the season.
ÂÂ
Point took the lead in the second inning, receiving back-to-back RBI-hits with two out. In the third, the Skyhawks closed out the day's scoring with five runs on two hits, a walk, and three hit batters.
ÂÂ
Milligan and Point will conclude the series Monday at 1 p.m.ÂÂ
