McGinnis sparks offense, Goodson leads defense against Point

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 11, 2014) â€" Taylor McGinnis crushed a three-run, pinch-hit homer to left field in the fifth inning, and Jessica Goodson fired a complete game, six-hit gem as the Milligan College softball team rallied to beat Point University 6-2 in game two and earn a doubleheader split Friday evening at Anglin Field.

Point (14-24, 7-11 AAC) took the opener 15-4 in five innings.

McGinnis hit her home run on a 2-0 pitch with runners on first and third and two away while thoughts still loomed about whether or not the Buffaloes (18-13, 14-4 AAC) would be able to put the game away.

Milligan led 2-1 when McGinnis homered but had failed to capitalize on several would-be big innings through the first four. The Buffs left two stranded in scoring position in each of the first two frames and had a runner doubled off the bases in each of the next two before McGinnis said enough was enough and smacked her fifth long ball of the season to put the game out of reach.

On defense, Goodson (4-2) shined in her second complete game of the year, limiting the Skyhawks to six hits, two earned runs, and a walk while striking out two. The left-hander gave up a two-out, run-scoring double in the top of the first but settled in to retire nine of the 12 batters she faced between the second and fourth.

Goodson ran into trouble in the fifth but escaped on a 1-2-3 double play.

Jessica Wheelock, who hit a two-out triple to kick start the fifth-inning outburst, finished game two 3-for-4 with a run scored. McGinnis, Maleah Wolfenbarger and Goodson all notched multihit games.

Five of Milligan's six runs in game two came with two out in the inning as the Buffs gave the Skyhawks a dose of their own medicine. In game one, all but two of Point's 15 runs were scored with two gone, and Milligan committed three two-out errors.

Chancli Connatser and Kimberly Robinson shared the workload, giving up two and three earned runs respectively. They gave up nine and six total. Connatser suffered the loss and fell to 10-7.

A quick turnaround will see Milligan face Georgia Gwinnett College Saturday at 2 p.m. on Anglin Field. The Buffs will then close out the regular season at home versus third-place Bryan College (21-18, 10-4) on Friday, April 18 at 2 p.m.
