One bad inning ruins chance for sweep

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 13, 2014) â€" Looking for the series sweep of first-place Tennessee Wesleyan College in Sunday's finale at Anglin Field, the Milligan College baseball team fell short in a 6-5 decision.

Milligan (19-16, 11-10 AAC) took the early lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first but gave up four runs in the third and couldn't claw back. Starting pitcher Ethan Fleenor used five pitches to get the first two out in the third inning, but Tennessee Wesleyan (24-18-1, 13-7 AAC) put the next three on base before first baseman K.J. Hockaday capped off the two-out rally with a three-run homer to left.

Fleenor gave up six earned runs on 11 hits and a walk and struck out three in the complete game, his second of the season.

Hockaday's home run made it 5-3, and after TWC plated one more in the fifth, Milligan started to whittle away at the deficit. With two out and the bases clear in the bottom of the sixth, Hunter Carpenter and Sam Tarlton had back-to-back singles up the middle before Carpenter came across to score on a Cody Hyder single through the left side. The Buffs scored one but stranded two in that inning.

With the score 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth, Carptenter and Tarlton were at it again, singling to lead off the inning and set up a Luke Kirk RBI-single. The Buffs left two more stranded in the eighth.

Milligan left 10 men on base in all.

Chavez Golden put the Buffaloes on the board in the first when he roped a bases-loaded single up the middle to score two. Tyler Weir followed with an RBI-groundout to make it 3-0 in the next at-bat.

The Buffaloes will be on the road until April 22 when they welcome Toccoa Falls College in a midweek tilt. Until then, Milligan will be on the road for Berea College on Wednesday, April 16 and St. Andrews University (22-17, 11-10 AAC) Saturday-Sunday, April 19-20.
