Baseball takes finale at Bryan, loses series 2-1

DAYTON, Tenn. (April 5, 2014) â€" A seven-run fourth inning fueled an 8-3 victory in game two of the Milligan College baseball team's split doubleheader at Bryan College on Saturday. Bryan won game one 7-5.

Milligan (17-13, 9-9 AAC) scored the first two in the fourth inning via a pair of singles from Edwin Soto and Blake Buck, a double from Tyler Weir, and a wild pitch by Bryan (24-17, 10-8) starting pitcher Tristan Speak. The Buffaloes then capitalized on four straight errors by Bryan to run away with the victory.

Jake Watts (5-2) earned the winning decision as he held Bryan to four hits and one run over six strong innings. Watts walked three and struck out four.

Buck finished game two 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Hunter Carpenter, Soto and Weir were all 1-for-4.

Game one (7-5, Bryan)

Similar to Friday night's series opener, Milligan used a late-inning rally to force a close finish but again allowed the Lions to respond with runs in their half of the inning. Brandon Malone and Soto drove in runs in the three-run outburst as Milligan tied the game at five and looked poised to take the lead with the bases loaded and one out. The inning ended, however, with Weir's liner back to the pitcher that turned into an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bryan hit back-to-back two-out singles with the bases loaded, scoring two to go back into the lead. Hunter McDaniel threw the fourth and part of the fifth and suffered the loss.

Sam Tarlton led the Milligan offense with two hits (2-for-3) while five other Buffs had one apiece.

A busy upcoming week will see Milligan play three midweek games, starting with a trip to Bluefield, Va., on Tuesday, April 8 for a meeting with Bluefield College.
