Women's soccer knocks off Columbia College, 1-0

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2014) â€" The Appalachian Athletic Conference frontrunner was sent home with its first league loss of the season as the Milligan College women's soccer team defeated Columbia College 1-0 Wednesday night at Anglin Field.

The Buffs improved to 2-6 on the season, and with the win against Columbia (5-3, 3-1 AAC), they gained their first conference win to move to 1-1.

"I thought we showed great character after a tough streak of games," commented Head Coach Lisa Buckley. "It was nice to get our first conference win."

Milligan took its first shot at the goal in the fourth minute of play, but they would not find the back of the net until the first period was nearly over. With only 2:41 remaining, Sidney Bailey scored the only goal of the night, giving Milligan the lead and the win.

However, the Buffs did not take the second period lightly, firing nearly double the amount of shots at the goal as in the first period (7). Though none found their way into the net, the Buffs kept constant pressure on the Koalas, holding them to one shot in the second half.

Rebecca Buchanan, Caroline Gill and Keri Harrison each took two shots at the goal, while Charlotte Stephens recorded four saves on the five total shots that the Koalas made in the match.

The Buffs will go on the road for their next two matches against Bryan College (Sept. 27, 4 p.m.) and Bluefield College (Oct. 3, 7 p.m.) before returning home to take on Montreat College on Oct. 8. Live streaming will be provided for the match, which will start at 7 p.m. at Anglin Field.
