Williams scores twice as women's soccer blanks Cumberlands

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 8, 2014) â€" Freshman Kyler Williams scored the first and second goals of her career Monday night in the Milligan College women's soccer team's 2-0 victory over University of the Cumberlands.

Playing at Anglin Field for the first time since the season opener back on Aug. 23, Milligan took advantage of a home crowd, familiar surroundings and a relentless offense to improve to 1-2 this season. The Patriots dropped to 0-3 overall.

Williams scored her first goal in the eighth minute of action, finding the back of the net on a carefully placed strike from the left side, roughly 15 yards out. Senior Lauren Brewer had the assist. Just under 80 minutes later, Williams doubled the lead with her second goal of the match (87') on an assist by Caroline Gill.

The two goals bookended a match that featured Milligan peppering the Patriots goal with 22 shots, 11 of which the Buffaloes put on frame. Williams and sophomore Rebecca Buchanan accounted for five shots apiece, including three apiece on goal.

The Buffaloes especially went to work midway through the second half as Keri Harrison, Buchanan, and Sami Joy narrowly missed goal-scoring opportunities during a span of three minutes when a Milligan goal felt imminent. Harrison's chance came on a scrambled play that ended with her taking a shot off a funny hop, lifting it over the top of the crossbar from approximately 15 yards out. Buchanan then followed with a rocket from 20 yards out that required a diving effort by Patriot goalkeeper Autumn Williams to stop. And Joy's opportunity came in the 71st minute on a free kick that she pushed a few feet wide.

"We're definitely creating more opportunities in front of the goal," Head Coach Lisa Buckley said after the win. "I'd like us to be a little more clinical with them, but we're more organized in the way that we are going forward and creating opportunities."

At the other end of the pitch, Charlotte Stephens faced only six shots and made a save on University of the Cumberlands only shot on frame. Her counterpart Williams made nine saves.

Milligan will be on the road for nearby Bristol, Tennessee, on Wednesday, Sept. 10 for a match against King University. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. The Buffaloes will be back on Anglin Field on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the final nonconference game of the season against Georgia Gwinnett College.
