MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 14, 2015) â€" Making her first collegiate start, freshmen goalkeeper
Taylor Robinson stood tall and made a career-high five saves, and sophomore
Sami Joy scored her second goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Milligan College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Bluefield College Wednesday night at Anglin Field.
With the loss, Milligan (3-8-1 overall) fell to 2-4-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, while Bluefield (4-4-3) raised its conference mark to 2-2-2.
Joy netted the lone goal for the Buffs and the first goal of the match at the 25:03 mark when she corralled a loose ball after a corner kick from
Keri Harrison and found the back of the net off the inside of the post.
Harrison and
Rebecca Buchanan led Milligan with two shots each, while five Buffs had a shot on goal.
Additionally, Robinson made several fine saves, including two in a span of 15 seconds with just over five minutes remaining in the first half to preserve the Buffs' lead heading into the locker room.
Despite the strong effort from Robinson, it was missed opportunities by the Buffs in the second half that kept the match close and led to several Bluefield counterattacks.
Brittany Davis and
Amy Long both had goal-scoring opportunities but were unable to finish as Davis sent one high at the 44:33 mark and Long had it saved by Brandi Anderson with 34:28 left on the clock.
Milligan had another opportunity to expand its lead at the 29:10 mark as freshman
Madison Thomas fired a shot that required a great save by a sprawling Anderson to keep the margin at one.
The save by Anderson turned out to bite the Buffs as after failing to get past Robinson in the first 72 minutes of action, Bluefield eventually found an answer at the 17:52 mark when Adriana Moreno scored on a well-struck ball to the top corner that Robinson got a hand on, but was unable to control.
Bluefield did not let up and less than a minute after its goal, fired another shot from Kali Furry that was just blocked away by
Ellery Allonier.
Next, with around 12 minutes left in regulation Harrison fired the first of her two shots on the night, requiring a save from Anderson, and then set up a corner kick at the 10:50 mark which led to her second shot 33 seconds later, which went wide.
With just over 10 minutes left, Milligan had yet another opportunity to retake the lead, but was unable to convert when another corner kick from Harrison led to a goal-scoring chance for Buchanan, who fired a winding shot around a Bluefield defender that went just wide.
The back-and-forth action led to the game-winning sequence from the Lady Rams with 2:45 left as Victoria Doyle scored off a header from a corner kick from Furry and a second assist to Jessica Newman.
Next up, Milligan will go on the road to Williamsburg, Kentucky, to face University of the Cumberlands in a rescheduled matchup from early in September. Match time is set for 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.
