MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 11, 2015) - Despite knocking down four 3-pointers in a span of three minutes late in the game, the Milligan College women's basketball team was unable to overcome Reinhardt as they fell 71-59 on Wednesday evening.
ÂÂ
The Buffs dropped to 10-16 overall and 9-9 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, while Reinhardt improved to 17-9 overall and 13-4 in the AAC, putting them one game behind No. 24 Union. The loss marked Milligan's third loss in the last 10 games.
ÂÂ
"I told our team before that Reinhardt is a great offensive rebounding team," Head Coach
Rich Aubrey said, "and sometimes you hate to be right. They are a really good offensive rebounding team."
ÂÂ
Milligan was outrebounded 43-21, including 22-5 on the offensive glass. That proved to be the difference as Reinhardt had an 18-5 advantage on second chance points.
ÂÂ
The Buffs were able to jump out to an early lead in the first half, but the heavy pressure from Reinhardt resulted in nine steals and the lead by the half. The Lady Eagles were able to finish the half on a 10-2 run, an almost identical run from the first time they met, a 66-50 decision in favor of Reinhardt on Jan. 3.
ÂÂ
But, the Buffs did not let that slow them down. In what seemed to be the momentum shifter, the Buffs put together a 16-2 run starting at the 12-minute mark and lasting to the seven-minute mark. The run started with three straight 3-pointers from
Allison Jones and
Callie Cox followed by another 3-pointer from
Chelsey Weddle. By the end of the run, the Buffs had cut the lead to five with roughly six minutes left.
ÂÂ
That was not enough, though. The Lady Eagles were able to climb out to a 12-point lead with two minutes left to put the game out of reach. Reinhardt would take the victory 71-59.
ÂÂ
"They had answers for every one of our runs," Aubrey said. "I thought that they hit a big three from the corner too, and part of that is that we have to pay so much attention to (Carmen Lockhart and Kateca Favors). But it is a credit to (Reinhardt). They had answers for us tonight in a lot of different ways."
ÂÂ
As a team, Milligan was 7-for-10 from the free throw line, and shot 40 percent from behind the 3-point line. The Buffs were led in scoring by Weddle who recorded 19 points and nine rebounds on the night. She was followed by Jones and Cox with 13, giving Cox her season high in points.
ÂÂ
Senior Carmen Lockhart led Reinhardt in scoring with a game-high 19 points. Junior Kateca Favors recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
ÂÂ
The Buffs will travel to Bluefield, Virginia, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, to face the Lady Rams of Bluefield College. The Buffs will return home the following Saturday to host Montreat College in the final home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
