MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 21, 2015) â€" In what was the final home game for the five seniors of the Milligan College women's basketball team, the Buffs sent them out with one last win as they defeated Montreat College 76-64 at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Saturday.
ÂÂ
Milligan secured the seventh seed and improved to 11-17 overall and 10-10 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, while Montreat fell to 2-25 overall and 1-19 in the AAC.
ÂÂ
"It was a great senior day, and I was happy for every one of them," noted Head Coach
Rich Aubrey. "It was nice to see (senior)
Kristian Moses in uniform whose health prevented her from playing this season, and it was great to see her and her mom so healthy."
ÂÂ
The Buffs ended the season on a high note with every competing senior entering the scoring column in their final home game of the season. The seniors were led in scoring by
Chelsey Weddle with 15 points,
Catelyn Radeck with eight,
Kylie Russell with five,
Shannon Jewett with four and
Jasmine Carter with three. Russell, Radeck and Jewett all reached a new career high, while Carter tied her mark.
ÂÂ
After trading blows for the first 10 minutes, the Buffs were able to jump ahead and secure the lead for the remainder of the game with the help of Weddle and
Hayley Wyrick. The run got started with several fast break points off steals from
Allison Jones, who recorded three in the first half. The Buffs were able to force 17 turnovers in the first half for a total of 27.  Seniors Weddle, Carter and Russell also recorded one steal apiece on the game to add to the Buffs total turnovers.
ÂÂ
The second half was no different. The Buffs were able to force 10 more turnovers and extend their lead to as many as 17 points. The Lady Cavaliers did not give in, though.
ÂÂ
Montreat was able to cut the lead to single digits with six minutes left in the game, but they were not able to overcome the offensive or defensive pressure the Buffs put on them. Milligan went on to defeat the Lady Cavaliers 76-64, and the electric crowd sent the seniors out with a standing ovation.
ÂÂ
The Buffs were led in scoring by Wyrick with 22 points followed by Weddle with 15. Weddle also led the team in assists with four and rebounds with 12, which gave her her fifth double-double of the season and 11th of her career. Jones led the team in steals with three.
ÂÂ
The Lady Cavaliers were led in scoring by Gabrielle King with a game high 26 points, followed by Hannah Calloway with 14. Charnay Ryland and Monique Thompson recorded a game high four steals.
ÂÂ
The Buffs return to action on Wednesday to face Truett-McConnell College in the opening round of the AAC tournament in Kingsport. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. If the Buffs win, they will then play the No. 2 seed on Thursday.
