Baseball wins two more, sweeps Shawnee State

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 7, 2015) â€" After senior transfer Josh Peterson tossed the Milligan College baseball team's second complete game shutout of the season in game one, Sam Tarlton provided a sacrifice fly that scored the winning run in game two, and the Buffaloes walked away with two more wins and a four-game series sweep over Shawnee State University on Saturday. Scores were 2-0 and 5-4.

With the sweep, the Buffs improved to 4-0, their first perfect start through the first four games of a season during Head Coach Nathan Meade's eight-plus seasons.

"Any time you get four wins against a good team like Shawnee State, you've got to feel good about it," Meade said. "It's a good start to the season, but it's just that; it's a start. We did a lot of things well, but there were things we need to continue to improve on and get better at. There's a good team coming in next weekend in Judson University, and they'll be ready to play."

Peterson, in his Milligan debut, allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked only one in an effort that rivaled Jake Watts' in the Buffs season opener on Friday. Watts struck out five, walked two and gave up two hits in his complete game shutout which also ended as a 2-0 victory for Milligan. Peterson never allowed a runner past first base and faced only two over the minimum. He also worked through four 1-2-3 innings and recorded a strikeout to end four of his seven frames.

"Our pitching and our defense gave us a chance to win every game (this weekend)" Meade said. "Early in the season, hitting is going to be sporadic at times so it's nice when your pitching can pull through."

Tarlton got the scoring going for the Buffs in game one, reaching on a walk to lead off the bottom of the first, then coming around to score on a passed ball by Shawnee State catcher Travis Bingham. Edwin Soto had a base hit in the inning which helped Tarlton move over.

Three innings later, Soto's younger brother, Bryan Soto, doubled the lead when he singled then scored on a Nate Clifton two-out base hit through the right side. E. Soto finished game one 3-for-3 with a double, Chavez Golden was 2-for-3, and B. Soto was 1-for-3.

Corey Jenkins made the start in game two but was chased partway through the fourth inning after giving up four runs on six hits. Jarrett Ramsay, Austin Perry (pictured) and Wyatt Richardson worked in his relief and combined for 3 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. Perry (1-0) threw two full innings, the fifth and sixth, and was on record when Tarlton drove in the final go-ahead run in a game that included three lead changes and scoring in both teams in each of the first three innings.

Richardson, who closed out the final inning in a non-save situation Friday night, needed only nine pitches in a perfect seventh and received the save.

Shane Salley scored the winning run on Tarlton's sac fly in the fifth after crushing a double over the head of left fielder Joe Wallen to lead off.

Four Buffaloes had multiple hits in game two, including E. Soto, Brandon Malone, Golden and Hunter Suggs.

Milligan will be back home for another four-game series, featuring two doubleheaders, against Judson University next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 13-14, on Anglin Field. Judson was a 42-win team in 2014, claiming its fourth straight season of 40+ wins and second straight season winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference title.
