DAYTON, Tenn. (Feb. 7, 2015) â€" ÂÂ
Chelsey Weddle scored a season high 26 points and
Allison Jones knocked down a game-winning jump shot with 35 seconds left, but it was defense in the closing seconds that pushed the Milligan College women's basketball team to a 68-67 victory at Bryan College Saturday afternoon.
ÂÂ
Milligan (10-15, 9-8 AAC) was the winner for the seventh time in the last nine games, with its two most recent losses coming against nationally ranked opposition. The Buffaloes also won their third straight and dropped the fourth-place Lady Lions to 17-7 (11-5 AAC).
ÂÂ
Jones had a wide open look from the in front of the Milligan bench after
Lindsee Price created space on a drive down the baseline. It left 34.7 seconds left on the clock when Bryan called timeout in a 68-67 game. From there, the Buffaloes faced four shots on their final defensive stand. Bryan forward Megan Billingsby had the last shot with 2.1 left but missed off the front iron.
ÂÂ
"So many people made big plays to give us the opportunity to win today," Head Coach
Rich Aubrey said. "Chelsey was great and made big play after big play. This is a very good win for us."
ÂÂ
Weddle finished with 26, three short of her career high set in November of last season, and eight rebounds. Jones had 12 points and eight rebounds to go along with four assists.
ÂÂ
The game featured only five ties and six lead changes, but two of the ties and three of the lead changes were in the final two minutes. Although Milligan led by as many as 10 in the first half, neither team led by more than two possessions after the halftime break.
ÂÂ
Milligan faced its largest deficit of six (61-55) with five minutes left but closed the game on a 13-6 run. The Buffs were 5-of-6 from the field, 3-for-4 from 3-point territory, and turned the ball over only once during that final stretch. Weddle had six points on a pair of made triples and finished 6-of-9 from 3-point range.
ÂÂ
Hayley Wyrick scored 15 points and registered four assists.
Callie Cox had seven points, three assists and three steals.
ÂÂ
Milligan will be back home on Wednesday, Feb. 11, for a doubleheader with the men's team beginning at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first of the final two home dates for the Buffs this season.?
