BREVARD, N.C. (Feb. 8, 2015) â€" Hitting made all the difference on Sunday as the Milligan College softball split a doubleheader with Brevard College. The scores were 9-2 Brevard and 8-0 Milligan.
ÂÂ
The Buffs (1-1) only made one hit in the first game, a two-run home run from Kimberly Robinson, but in game two, Milligan added 10 to their previous total to register 11 hits, scoring eight runs over Brevard (2-4). ÂÂ
Robinson's homer came in the fourth inning of game one, bringing home Natalie Sheffey who had just been walked and stopping Brevard's pitcher, Jamie Hrobak, from taking a no-hitter. This was the only action the Buffs saw though as Hrobak recorded nine strikeouts in the game. ÂÂ
However in game two, the tables turned. Robinson pitched a complete game in the second matchup, allowing only two hits in the entire contest with no walks. She recorded two 1-2-3 innings, including the final inning which ended with Robinson catching a line shot and turning a double play.
ÂÂ
The Buffs opened up the batting in the second game. Sheffey started off the hitting with a triple in the first, but she was left on base as the Brevard defense ended the inning strong. However, from there, the Buffs scored in every inning, taking advantage of well-placed hits and speedy base running.
ÂÂ
Milligan will stay on the road against NCAA Division II opponents in its next series with Mars Hill University on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The Buffs will return home for their home opener three days later to take on No. 23 Davenport University on Friday, Feb. 13.
