Softball splits twinbill with Montreat

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 24, 2015) â€" One of this season's most exciting finishes was overshadowed by one of the toughest losses Tuesday afternoon in an Appalachian Athletic Conference contest as Milligan College split a doubleheader, 5-4 and 3-12, with regional rival Montreat College at Anglin Field.

Natalie Sheffey gave the Buffs (11-7, 8-4 AAC) the victory in game one when she drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring Kaitlin Campbell who was pinch running for Jessica Goodson. Goodson drew a walk herself earlier in the inning after a one-out double by Makenzie Lilley started the rally.

Milligan trailed 4-1 with two out in the bottom of the fifth but came from behind with two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Kimberly Robinson provided both RBI's in the fifth on a single down the left field line. Robinson would also collect the winning decision in the pitcher's circle after going four innings in Meghan Nicol's relief. Robinson allowed only three hits with no walks while striking out one.

Robinson was the starting pitcher for game two, and things looked bright through the first four frames as Sheffey and Robinson base hits in the third and a Lilley solo home run in the fourth had the Buffaloes leading 3-1. Everything came unraveled for them in the fifth, however, as Montreat (6-23, 3-7 AAC) plated seven runs on four hits and two errors in the inning.

Milligan will be back to Anglin Field for another AAC doubleheader on Wednesday, facing St. Andrews University at 1 p.m. The doubleheader is a recently rescheduled contest, originally slated for Saturday.
