Tennessee Wesleyan defense stonewalls softball

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 31, 2015) â€" With only four hits total in the doubleheader, the Milligan College softball team was unable to pick the lock of the Tennessee Wesleyan defense as the Bulldogs completed the sweep without giving up a run. The Buffs fell 3-0 and 5-0.

Milligan (11-11, 8-8 AAC) struggled to put the ball outside of the hands of the waiting Tennessee Wesleyan (21-5, 12-2 AAC) defense in both games. The Bulldogs made a series of diving catches and laser-beam throws throughout the day to stop the Buffs from scoring.

Two such plays stopped the Buffs from gaining the momentum they desperately needed in game two. Milligan loaded the bases in the fourth and looked to be ready to make a rally, but a barehanded catch and throw from third baseman Rachel Percy caught Jessica Connatser at home as she attempted to score on a Kimberly Robinson hit.

Two innings later, Natalie Sheffey would be robbed of a routine single as Graeson McCaslin made a diving stop and barely threw Sheffey out while still on the ground.

Despite the struggle on offense, Milligan's defense played well, specifically in game one. Aside from the four hits earned by the Bulldogs in the first inning of game one, the Buffs, led by Meghan Nicol, held Tennessee Wesleyan hitless and scoreless for the final six innings of the game.

The Buffs never committed an error in either game, but the lack of offense doomed them in the end.

Connatser led the Buffs with two of the four hits on the day.

Milligan will go on the road for their next three sets of games, taking on Union College on April 3, Tennessee Temple University on April 7 and No. 22 Reinhardt University on April 8. The Buffs will host Tennessee Temple back at home in their final regular season doubleheader on April 10.
