BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (March 8, 2015) â€" It's been over a month since the Milligan College baseball team has been able to play a game, and the rust was apparent Sunday afternoon as the Buffaloes resumed their season with a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference losses to Union College, 6-1 and 8-3.
ÂÂ
Milligan (4-2, 0-2 AAC) will conclude the three-game set with Union (9-3, 2-0 AAC) Monday at 1 p.m.
ÂÂ
Union jumped out in front in game one with a run in the first and four more in the third. The Bulldogs benefited from a walk/hit batter to start both innings and pushed them across with the help of three Milligan errors. In game two, Milligan was the first on the scoreboard, but Union responded with runs in four straight innings, punctuated by a four-run fourth.
ÂÂ
Starting pitchers
Jake Watts and
Justin Freeman were dealt the losses, each after a day in which they exited with one out in the fourth.
Tanner Strange, Jarrett Ramsay,
Austin Perry and
Corey Jenkins all turned in solid relief efforts, but Milligan's offense was unable to overcome the early deficits. Jenkins threw a pair of innings in game two and gave up three hits and one (unearned) run after Ramsay had closed out game one striking out both batters he faced.
ÂÂ
The Buffs pitching staff held Union to four hits in the opener, but the Milligan offense struggled as well, producing only two hits.
Nick Loughry accounted for one in the seventh inning as he drove in
Edwin Soto for Milligan's lone run. Loughry then was 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs in game two. He got the scoring going with a two-out double in the second inning that set up a
Josh Peterson RBI double.
ÂÂ
After Milligan and Union finish the series on Monday, Milligan is tentatively scheduled to be back home on Tuesday for a make-up doubleheader against Bluefield College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Anglin Field.ÂÂ
