BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (March 9, 0215) â€" Like each of the first two games of the three-game series between the Milligan College baseball team and Union College, the difference was one big inning, and the Buffaloes lost 7-2 to close out their first Appalachian Athletic Conference series on Monday.
ÂÂ
Milligan (4-3, 0-3 AAC) out-hit Union (10-3, 3-0 AAC) 9-8 but suffered a defensive sixth inning where the Bulldogs batted around the order and scored six runs. It marked the third straight loss for Milligan since opening the season with a four-game sweep against Shawnee State in early February.
ÂÂ
Eight Buffaloes recorded at least one hit, led by Nate Clifton who went 2-for-3. Brandon Malone accounted for both RBI's as he hit a two-out, two-run homer, his first of the season, in the eighth. ÂÂ
Josh Peterson (1-1) took the loss despite allowing only five hits and three walks over five innings. He never saw more than one runner on base in an inning through the first three, then one of two Milligan errors allowed Union to open the scoring with a run in the fourth. An inning later, a couple of walks to open the frame allowed Union to double the lead, and the Bulldogs put the game away in the sixth. ÂÂ
Austin Perry and Corey Jenkins worked the final two innings for Milligan's bullpen and combined to strike out three with no walks and no runs on one hit. ÂÂ
Milligan will play at home on Tuesday, March 10, in a makeup doubleheader against Bluefield College. First pitch will be at 1 p.m. on Anglin Field.
