Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball drops two close decisions at home

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 14, 2015) â€" Despite taking early leads in both games of a nonconference doubleheader against Southern Wesleyan University, the Milligan College baseball team lost both, 6-4 and 5-4, on Tuesday evening at Anglin Field.

Milligan (20-13, 12-9 AAC) gave up the first lead in each game but answered in the ensuing at-bat with big plays that put the Buffaloes on top. In game one, Andrew Copas and Sam Tarlton had back-to-back RBI singles with two out as Milligan erased an early 1-0 deficit. Bryan Soto followed with an RBI single in the third inning to put the Buffs back on top 3-2, but it was nearly all Warriors from there.

In game two, Southern Wesleyan jumped out on top with a 3-0 lead through the first half inning, but Milligan responded with four runs in the bottom half. Again, however, it was all SWU from there. Brandon Malone, Chavez Golden, Shane Salley and Soto all drove in runs, in consecutive at-bats, to put the Buffs up 4-3, answering back-to-back home runs hit by Southern Wesleyan in the previous half-inning.

Soto, Tarlton, Nate Clifton and Golden each registered multiple hits on the day, with Edwin Soto drawing three walks in the opener. Defensively, Tanner Strange and Hunter McDaniel made the starts and lasted five innings apiece. Corey Jenkins relieved McDaniel in game two and struck out four over two innings but suffered the loss as a single up the middle with two out in the top of the seventh provided Wesleyan with the eventual winning run.

Up next, Milligan will jump back to its Appalachian Athletic Conference schedule with a three-game series against St. Andrews University (23-18, 11-7 AAC), currently third in the league, over the weekend. The SAU series represents the final home series for the Buffs this season.
