Bruinius sets career high again as volleyball gets back to winning ways at Point

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 12, 2015) â€" One match after setting her career high in kills with 13, junior Samantha Bruinius topped herself again, finishing with a new career high 17 kills en route to helping the Milligan College volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14) victory over Point University Saturday at the West Point Park Gymnasium.

In addition to her offensive output, Bruinius was also effective defensively, chipping in with 14 digs to go along with 14 by Grace Ann Moorhouse. Marissa Langford and Emilee Linkous added 11 kills each, and current back-to-back Appalachian Athletic Conference Setter of the Week Jessica Davenport finished with 41 assists. Lastly, Linkous was also strong defensively with 4.5 blocks.

With the win, Milligan's record drew even at 5-5 and 2-2 in the AAC, while Point's dropped to 2-5 and 1-4.

In the opening set, the Buffaloes used a 7-0 run to take a 7-2 lead, before a 6-3 Skyhawk run made it 10-8. With the set tied at 16, 17 and 18, the Buffs scored three times to make it 21-18 and give them the space they needed to take the set 25-20.

Neither team led by more than two points in the second set until Milligan scored three straight points to go up 16-13. After Point made it 18-16, the Buffs finished the set on a 7-2 run to win it 25-18.

In the third set, Milligan turned a 3-0 deficit into a 7-4 advantage before going down again at 10-8. Five ties later, the Skyhawks expanded a 15-15 score into a 22-18 lead thanks to a 7-3 run, but the Buffs battled back with five straight points to tie it at 22 and take the lead at 23-22 before giving up three straight scores to drop the set 25-23.

After a 6-6 tie early in the fourth set, the Buffs took control of the match for good thanks to a 5-1 mini-run to make it 11-7, and expanded their lead to five at 16-11. From there, Milligan finished the match on an impressive 9-3 run to finish off the Skyhawks 25-14.

Next up, the Buffs will play two road matches next week on Tuesday and Thursday at Montreat College and Uva.-Wise, respectively. The Buffs return home Oct. 2.
