MONTREAT, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2015) â€" Led by 10 service aces by seven players and a double-double by
Jessica Davenport, the Milligan College volleyball team got its second straight victory by defeating Montreat College 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-33) Tuesday night at the McAlister Gymnasium.
With its second consecutive win, Milligan's record rose to above .500 at 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, while the Lady Cavalier's fell to 2-13 and 1-2 in the AAC. Each of Montreat's three AAC matches have been at home.
Jenna Headrick had three of the 10 aces for the Buffaloes to go along with a team-high eight kills, while Davenport added two aces, 19 assists and a team-high 12 digs.
Marissa Langford and
Samantha Bruinius were next with seven and six kills respectively, while
Grace Ann Moorhouse had eight digs and
Heather Harvey had nine assists.
Milligan trailed in the first set 12-9 before using three straight kills, one by Linkous and two by Bruinius, followed by an ace by Davenport to take the lead 13-12 and begin an impressive 13-1 Buff run that gave them a 22-13 advantage. Milligan would go on to win the opening set 25-18, and was led by five kills by
Emilee Linkous, her only ones of the match, seven digs by Davenport and an ace by Davenport, Brunius and Linkous.
In the second set, the Buffs were down 3-8 before coming back to take a 13-2 lead thanks to a 10-4 run. Next, with the set tied at 18, Milligan went on a 7-4 run to close out the set 25-22 and go up 2-0.
Savannah Benton and Moorhouse each contributed with a service ace in the second frame, while Headrick had the first two of her three on the match.
Milligan trailed again in the third set, this time at 15-12 before a 4-1 mini-run featuring two kills and another ace by Headrick to finish the run tied it at 16. Lastly, with the Buffs down 23-21 and teetering on the brink of being forced to a fourth set, a kill by Headrick followed by three from Langford dashed away any hopes remaining by the Lady Cavaliers.
Headrick was strong with six kills in the set to go along with four by Langford, while Harvey had five assists and
Jadin Foster and Davenport each added aces to go along with the one by Headrick.
Next up, Milligan continues its 11-match road trip on Thursday at UVa.-Wise, and then will have four more matches before coming back to the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Oct. 2. The Buffs are now 2-4 on the road trip after dropping the first four matches.
