Volleyball sweeps Truett-McConnell for AAC win

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Sept. 25, 2015) â€" Three days after winning one of the longest and most eventful matches of the season, the Milligan College volleyball team breezed through an easy sweep of Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Truett-McConnell College 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-16) Friday night on the road.

The win moved Milligan to 8-6 (5-2 AAC) where the Buffs stand at third in the league. Truett-McConnell dropped to 5-6 (2-3 AAC).

Jessica Davenport, who reached 3,000 career assists in a five-set battle against Bluefield on the road earlier this week, made sure everyone had a taste of the success at Truett. The senior had 31 assists, 12 digs and five kills without an error. She targeted nine players, six of which finished with three or more kills.

Sophomore Marissa Langford and senior Emilee Linkous, both coming off career highs in kills their last time out, led the Buffs in the kill category with nine and seven, respectively.

Milligan used a 7-1 run in the middle of the first set to pull away, and eventually closed the opening frame on a run of 16-6. The Buffs then opened the second set with the first three points, on back-to-back-to-back kills by Jenna Headrick (two) and Langford, and never looked back.

Milligan's only deficit larger than one point in any set came at the start of the third when Truett jumped out to a 6-1 lead. From there, Milligan battled back to tie it at 9-9, then ran away with the remainder of the match.

Milligan's current 11-match road trip will conclude on Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a tri-match at King University, where the Buffs will face King and Concord University in Bristol, Tennessee. After that, Milligan will be back home for the first time since early September when the Buffs host AAC foe St. Andrews University on Friday, Oct. 2.
