MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2016) â€" Freshman
Bekah Cundiff and junior
Brittany Davis each scored twice as the Milligan College women's soccer team ran away with an 8-0 victory over nonconference opponent Hiwassee College Thursday evening on Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
Cundiff had the first two goals of the game while Davis had the first two of the second half to help Milligan improve back over .500 at 7-6 (3-4 AAC). They were two of the six Buffs to find the back of the net on the night as
Megan Williams,
Katelyn Johnson,
Amy Olvera and
Nicole Blais all scored as well.
ÂÂ
Within 30 seconds of the start of the match and on Milligan's first possession,
Amy Long slotted a pass along the top of the 18 to Olvera at the top of the box for an open shot, and while Olvera's shot was saved, the ease with which Milligan found the scoring opportunity was how it went for the remaining 89 and a half minutes. Milligan peppered the Hiwassee goal with 50 shots including 20 put on frame, building a 4-0 lead by the half and doubling it in the second.
ÂÂ
Leading that effort were Blais, a freshman, and Williams, a sophomore, both with seven shots off the bench. A total of 14 Buffs took at least one shot in the win including goalkeeper
Taylor Robinson, whose penalty kick attempt in the second half went wide.
ÂÂ
Milligan opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Cundiff scored the first of her two goals on a shot from the left side which she scored at the far post. She doubled the lead in the 23rd minute with a shot that caromed off the far post and into the back of the net.
ÂÂ
Milligan in fact hit the post or crossbar several times, with Olvera heading her goal off the post in the 69th minute after a crossing pass was sent in by
Vanessa Quinones.
ÂÂ
Playing some of the key roles in Milligan's scoring chances were Long who contributed two assists, freshman
Dharma Fawbush who assisted Davis' second goal early in the second half, and Johnson who found Blais for a goal which rounded out the scoring in the 80th minute.
ÂÂ
For Williams, Johnson and Blais, this marked their first goals with the Buffs.
ÂÂ
Milligan has only one more home match this season, and it will be this weekend as the Buffs host Appalachian Athletic Conference member St. Andrews University Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
