Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 24 women's basketball falls to Asbury

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (Nov. 27, 2016) â€" The No. 24 Milligan College women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Asbury University, 78-61, on day two of the NAIA DII Showcase Sunday afternoon at the MeadowView Marriott.

The loss put the Buffs at 6-3 (3-0 AAC) so far this season, and all three losses have come against nationally recognized competition. Asbury (4-4) was receiving votes in the latest NAIA top-25 poll and was fresh off a win over Appalachian Athletic Conference member Tennessee Wesleyan, 81-55, on day one of the tournament.

Sophomore Sarah Robinson led Milligan with 23 points while adding seven rebounds. Hayley Wyrick scored 12 to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. Six other Buffs entered the scoring column.

Milligan started cold, Asbury started hot, and it all cost the Buffs down the stretch. After the Eagles knocked down a 3-pointer on their opening possession, they built leads of 17-4, 26-7, and eventually 30-11 at the end of the first quarter. Milligan outscored Asbury 50-48 the rest of the way.

Asbury started the game 4-of-6 from 3-pointer territory while Milligan started 0-for-4. Milligan was able to climb back despite finishing the game 26.7 percent from the field (20-75) and Asbury finishing the game 51.7 percent from the field (30-58).

The closest Milligan made it after the first quarter was 13 when Courtney Wilson made a field goal with 8:30 left in the game to make it 68-55. Milligan followed with misses on its next six shots, one that would have cut it to a 10-point game, as Asbury scored the next seven points to go up 75-55 and put the game away.

Lindsee Price, who set a career high of 13 assists two weeks ago against St. Andrews, finished with eight assists. Savannah Raizor led the Buffs with eight rebounds.

For Asbury, Oney Harrison led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Kali Whiteside registered a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Milligan will return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 30, for an AAC matchup against Reinhardt University. It will be the first of the two final home games for the Buffs until 2017.
