BABSON PARK, Fla. (Dec. 13, 2016) â€" The No. 23 Milligan College women's basketball team overcame a slow start to force an exciting finish, but in the end the Buffaloes lost to Webber International University 74-66 Tuesday evening in nonconference action.
ÂÂ
Milligan, which had won nine of its previous 11 games this season, fell to 9-5 (6-1 AAC) while Webber snapped a five-game losing skid to improve to 4-6.
ÂÂ
Milligan fell behind 10-0 early in the game but managed to battle back in the second quarter. Much of that came from an 8-0 run over the first 1:27 of the second quarter which helped the Buffs tie the game at 24-24.
Kelly Barnett then connected on a 3-pointer coming out of a Webber timeout to put Milligan up 27-24, and the Buffs looked to be turning the table.
ÂÂ
Webber, however, responded with a run of its own, 14-6, to close the half and go into the locker room ahead 38-35.
ÂÂ
The second half was very similar to the first. After a slow start during the first few possessions, Milligan caught fire from 3-point territory as
Lindsee Price made one from the wing to make it 45-44, then
Mackenzie Raizor made one from the corner to give the Buffs the lead, 47-45. A few minutes later,
Cassidy Anderson and
Hayley Wyrick did the same by knocking down back-to-back triples from the same spot on the left wing to cap a 6-0 run and put Milligan on top 55-53 at the end of the third quarter.
ÂÂ
Similar to the start of the game, Webber started the fourth quarter with a surge that put them into the lead for good, and enough made free throws down the stretch helped seal the win for the Warriors. Webber outscored Milligan 21-11 in the fourth quarter.
ÂÂ
Milligan was led in scoring by Wyrick and Raizor who both scored 11. Raizor added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Barnett and
Sarah Robinson both scored 10 while Barnett added five assists and Robinson added 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of this season.
ÂÂ
Five other Buffs entered the scoring category as Anderson had six points; Price had five points and five assists;
Courtney Wilson had five points and four rebounds; and
Morgan Gose and
Savannah Raizor each added four points.
ÂÂ
Webber was led by Quanthavia Stalworth who scored 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field. Victoria Baggett followed closely with 21 points on 7-of-9 from the field.
ÂÂ
Milligan has one more game scheduled during its trip to Florida as the Buffs face Warner University on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The final game of 2016 will be New Year's Eve when Milligan travels to Longwood University for a 2 p.m. game.
