Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Flurry of career highs leads men's basketball in high-scoring win

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2016) â€" The Buffaloes scored 23 points in the first five minutes of action, all of which came via the three ball or a senior, as the Milligan College men's basketball netted its third 100-point game of the season in a 101-82 nonconference victory over Johnson University Wednesday night at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

With the win, Milligan's record advanced to 14-9 overall as the Buffs remained undefeated in nonconference action outside of two games played at the NAIA Division II Showcase in late November. Additionally, the Buffs captured their fourth straight win over Johnson (8-14) as they reached at least 93 points and won by at least 19 for the third time in the last four tries.

The career nights were paced by Julian Bailey, who finished with a career-high 28 points on a career-high 11 field goals. Bailey also added 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double and second straight effort of 21 or more points against Johnson. Kurt Brooks was next with 20 points on 6-of-8 3-pointers, his second straight game of six threes against the Royals. Brooks also tied a career high with seven assists, the same number dished by freshman Cole Anderson, who set his career high in the category.

David Casaday connected on four 3-pointers as he finished with 16 points, and Alex Biggerstaff also hit four threes, a career high, and had 15 points. The fifth and final Buff to reach double-figure scoring was Edward Kalu, who scored a career-high 10 points on a career-high four made field goals.

As a team, Milligan scored over 50 points in each half for the first time since Dec. 19, 2012, when the Buffs defeated Coach Bill Robinson's alma mater, The Kings College, 101-79. The Buffs also hit at least 14 threes against the Royals for the second straight game, and outscored Johnson 43-18 in bench scoring and 32-22 in the paint with 16 points in the painted area each half.

Unlike the first meeting between the two teams back on Nov. 10, Milligan never trailed in this one as Brooks connected on three triples in the first minute and a half. Two scores by James Songster, a pair of free throws by Bailey, and threes from Casaday and Biggerstaff rounded out the Buffs scoring in the first five minutes as Milligan raced out to a 23-4 lead. In addition to the scoring, the group of Brooks, Songster, Bailey, Casaday and Biggerstaff also assisted on seven of Milligan's first nine makes as the Buffs began with an assist on each of their first nine field goals.

One of the other assists came from Anderson, who had four helpers in the first half, another of which came on Biggerstaff's second three of the half with 8:47 to go to make it 34-12.

After netting seven 3-pointers in each half last time against Johnson, Milligan hit seven threes in this one in just over 11 minutes of action. While Brooks had three of those 3-pointers in the first half and Biggerstaff had two, Casaday also had three, with the latter coming with only four minutes left in the frame to make the score 46-20.

Additionally in the first half, Kalu broke through with nine points and four boards as he scored for the first time this season at the 10:29 mark. Kalu then scored on back-to-back tries, both on assists from Anderson, just under the five-minute mark, and then scored for a final time in the frame to make it 48-22 with three and a half minutes left. Kalu then kept up the good play with an assist to Ike Ndulue, who finished with his fourth basket of the season, in the final minute of the first half.

Like the Buffs, five Royals also scored in double figures as Kenny White had 24 points, Taylor Gilpin had 13, Kenton Guillon had 12, Gunner St. John had 11 and Ricky Bowen had 10. Additionally, Nick Marshall had a game-high eight assists.

Next up, Milligan remains at home to wrap up a three-game home stand with Point University on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m. The women's game will start at 2 p.m., while the men will then have only one AAC game remaining before senior day on Saturday, Feb. 20.
