MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 3, 2016) â€" All 19 of Milligan College's first 19 field goals of the game featured an assist while five Buffaloes connected on a 3-pointer in the first 20 minutes, setting a trend for the entire game as the No. 21 women's basketball team began to take control at the end of the second half during a 69-59 win over Bluefield College Wednesday night at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
ÂÂ
The Buffs improved to 19-5 overall and an Appalachian Athletic Conference best 13-2 with the win. Milligan also earned its fifth sweep in seven total chances so far this season, and fourth of five chances in AAC play. Bluefield fell to 12-10 and 7-8 after playing as good of basketball as anyone in the conference since the beginning of January. The Lady Rams were 7-3 since the new year, a span the Buffs are now 7-2 during, while one of their losses was only a four-point decision at Point University.
ÂÂ
Milligan finished with 22 assists as a team compared to seven for Bluefield, while
Lindsee Price tied her career high with eight assists, a feat she has accomplished twice so far this season. Price was also close to a triple-double as she had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Allison Jones added four helpers and
Kelly Barnett and
Callie Cox each had three.
ÂÂ
Sarah Robinson had the 10th double-double of her freshman campaign through three quarters, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Cox matched Robinson in the scoring column with 13 on three 3-pointers (3-of-5), while Price also added three from long range. Both Cox and Jones also added five boards.
ÂÂ
The final Buff to reach double digits in scoring was
Andi Lamb, who tied her career high with 10 on 2-of-4 shooting from three, the same mark Barnett, who finished with eight points, was from three.
Milligan's first seven baskets were made by seven players as the Buffs sank five threes in the first 14 minutes of the game. The Buffs did not let up on the three-ball, making two more to end the first half and capping a 9-0 run to give Milligan the lead for good.
ÂÂ
The Buffs trailed 14-8 after a 12-0 Lady Rams run in the first quarter, and 25-21 after a 7-0 Bluefield stretch in the second, but continued to shoot with confidence as Barnett, Jones,
Morgan Gose, Price and Cox all connected on a triple-try in the first half.
ÂÂ
Price, who hit two threes herself to that point, assisted on three of the long-range buckets and had another helper on a score from
Courtney Wilson that helped Milligan end a four-minute scoreless spell in the first quarter. The final Buff to score in the first half was Robinson, who finished with a strong backdoor layup to start an 8-2 Buffs' run in the first three minutes of the game and also scored to stop Bluefield's run in the second quarter and kickoff the 9-0 Milligan run to end the first 20 minutes.
ÂÂ
Just like in the scoring column, seven Buffs recorded a rebound in the first half, and six dished out at least one assist. By the end of the game, each category would be filled by eight Buffs, while six finished with at least one three-point make.
ÂÂ
In the third quarter, Milligan was even better from behind the arc, hitting four of its first six attempts, two from Cox and one each from Price and Lamb. Price added four assists in the quarter and Robinson scored six of the Buffs' first nine points of the quarter to reach her double-double.
ÂÂ
Bluefield was led by a game-high 18 points from Maryah Mazyck, while Shelby Key added 12 and Monique Robson had 10. The triplet also led the Lady Rams in rebounding, with six boards coming from Mazyck and five from both Key and Robson.
ÂÂ
Next up, Milligan travels to Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky, for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Bulldogs before returning home next week for games on Monday, Feb. 8, against Tennessee Wesleyan College and Saturday, Feb. 13, against Point University. The two home games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, with the men's games to follow.
