MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 8, 2016) â€" The Buffaloes loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second inning, and were able to bring in all three runs as the Milligan College baseball team never looked back and defeated Fisher College, 13-11, Tuesday evening at Anglin Baseball Field.
Milligan (9-10) recorded its fourth straight victory and its highest scoring output of the season so far as six Buffs recorded at least two hits while scoring twice, and five Buffs had both an RBI and a run.
Milligan's three-run second inning came after the Falcons took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings.
Justin Pearson started off the rally with an infield single to the hole at short, and was followed by walks from
Andrew Copas and
Nelson Schneider to fill the bags. Runs batted in by
Braden Jones,
Bryan Soto and
Shane Salley then followed to give the Buffs their only lead.
The Buffs pushed across two more runs in the third inning as Schneider scored for the second time and added his first of two doubles, and Jones collected his second RBI to that point.
Next, after
Hunter Townsend sent his third home run of the season over the right field fence in the fourth inning, Milligan again loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth as a single by Copas, a double by Schneider and a walk by Jones set up another high scoring inning. The Buffs finished with six runs in the inning as
Hunter Suggs, Soto, Townsend and
Thomas Miller kept the RBI theme going. Townsend finished with a game-high four RBI's.
Milligan's starting pitcher, junior
Luke Spaulding (1-2), settled in after the first two innings where he allowed four hits, hit two batters and had a wild pitch. Overall, Spaulding finished with five innings of work, striking out four batters while surrendering only one walk, but nine hits. Sophomores
Dustin Cole and
Jacob Littleton were effective in relief as Cole struck out three batters without allowing a base runner through two innings, and then Littleton tossed the final two innings, striking out the last two batters of the game with a runner on third.
With the Buffs leading 13-3 in the eighth inning, the Falcons provided a major scare in the form of a two-homer, eight-run inning to cut Milligan's advantage to only two runs before Littleton entered to earn his team-leading second save of the season.
Next up, Milligan baseball remains at home to play Fisher Wednesday in an attempt to get back to .500 on the year. The Buffs and Falcons battle in another single game on tomorrow, March 9, at 12 p.m. The Buffs then hit the highway for two conference series, the first being Truett-McConnell College on Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12.
