Soto's walkoff sends Buffs to fifth straight win

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 9, 2016) â€" Sophomore Bryan Soto scored the Buffaloes first run of the game, and it was his hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth that capped a final-inning comeback for the Milligan College baseball team. The Buffs defeated Fisher College 3-2 to complete their second sweep of the season.

With the victory, Milligan (10-10) also evened its record back up to .500 on the season, and won its fifth game in a row.

After a leadoff triple by the Falcons resulted in the first run of the game in the top of the fourth, Soto singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Soto advanced to third on Hunter Townsend's walk and Shane Salley's single before being driven in on a sacrifice fly to left by Justin Pearson. Salley was the lone Buff with two hits on the day.

Fisher responded with back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh to take the lead back, but it was Milligan's answer in the bottom of the ninth that made the difference in the end.

Nelson Schneider led off the final half inning with a hit and advanced to second on Jake Weaver's sacrifice. Thomas Miller then brought in Schneider with a single through the hole at short, and then was replaced on the base paths by Tucker McPherson.

McPherson stole second and advanced to third on a Fisher error before two intentional passes to Braden Jones and Hunter Suggs loaded the bags and set up the dramatic ending for Soto.

Wyatt Richardson, Milligan's starting pitcher, had one of his best outings of the season, allowing seven hits and only two runs through six innings while striking out three. Dustin Cole (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with three innings of no-hit, no-walk baseball. Cole also kept his perfect earned run average intact.

Next up, Milligan travels to Cleveland, Georgia, for the first of two road conference series. The Buffs will play at Truett-McConnell College on Thursday, March 10, and Friday, March 11, before heading to Bluefield College on Saturday, March 19, and Sunday, March 20.
