MILLIGAN COLLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2016) â€" Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Stephens made seven saves and the Milligan College women's soccer team played one of the top teams in the country close, but the Buffaloes fell to No. 18 Reinhardt University 1-0 on Saturday.
The loss was the second straight by the same score for Milligan (4-4, 1-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference). Reinhardt, which had already posted a win over a national top-10 team this season, stayed undefeated in conference play at 8-1 (2-0 AAC).
The deciding goal came in the 47th minute, and it was one of Reinhardt's few good scoring opportunities of the half. Katie Goodrich scored it on an assist from Allie Hale as Hale slotted a through ball to Goodrich who finished from inside the penalty area.
Milligan had several chances of its own, including one to tie it with 10 minutes left, but a series of shots and open looks were denied amidst a crowded box. The chance followed a free kick from Christine Hardin.
Milligan's best chance of the first half came roughly 30 minutes in when Hardin played a ball to Dharma Fawbush who took one touch to send it to Bekah Cundiff at the top of the penalty area. Cundiff made one move to get by a defender and create an open look, but her shot was saved by a diving attempt from Reinhardt goalkeeper Taylor Asher.
Reinhardt led the shot totals at 23-13 and 13-10 on shots on goal. Asher made eight saves compared to Stephens' seven. Cundiff and Hardin paced Milligan's offense with three shots apiece.
Milligan will continue the season with three matches on the road before returning home to Anglin Field for an AAC game against Montreat College on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
