Volleyball drops first AAC game of season

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2016) - Milligan College's women's volleyball team traveled to Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Union College on Tuesday night. In a rematch of their conference opener, the Buffaloes fell in four close sets (25-18, 25-21, 31-33, 25-20), losing their first AAC game of the season.

Milligan (17-5, 8-1 AAC) concluded its six game road trip against its top competition for the AAC regular season title. The Buffaloes struggled on offense, posting their lowest attack percentage of their conference schedule. On the other side of the net, Union had a strong offensive performance with 67 kills to Milligan's 37.

After dropping the first two sets, the Buffaloes rallied to win their closest set of the season. After fighting off several match points, Kellee Geren set up fellow freshman Julie Dockery for the kill to send the match to a fourth set.

However, Union bounced back from dropping the third set and led the entire fourth, eventually closing it out 25-20.

Marissa Langford led the Buffaloes with nine kills on the night, with Samantha Bruinius following at eight. ?Geren played an all-around solid game, leading Milligan with 32 assists and 20 digs. Grace Ann Moorhouse and Alyssa Rupert added to the defensive effort with 17 and 14 digs respectively.

Milligan returns home for the first time in over two weeks for one of its last non-conference games of the season. The Buffaloes host the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
