Buffs sweep Bulldogs for AAC win

ATHENS, Tenn. (Oct. 10, 2017) â€" Freshman Julia Codispoti registered a career high 13 kills to lead all attackers and the Milligan College volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-19, 25-21) of Tennessee Wesleyan University Tuesday evening. The win was the third straight and fourth in the last five matches for the Buffs.

Codispoti has also been hot in the last four matches, having tallied double digits for kills in three of the last four matches. Her previous best this season was 11 versus Bethel back on Sept. 1.

Tuesday night five Buffs recorded multiple kills, with senior Marissa Langford (nine), Julie Dockery (eight), Alora Ricker (six) and Kellee Geren (four). Whereas Codispoti was the only Buff in double figures for kills, three Buffs were in double figures for digs. Junior libero Alyssa Rupert had 19, Ricker had 17 and Langford had 11.

Milligan had a bit of a slow start in each set, but in each set finished strong. In the opening frame, the score was tied 9-9 until a 10-3 run provided the Buffs plenty of separation, then a 6-3 run closed it. Milligan then got separation at 10-10 in the second set but saw the Bulldogs keep the margin slim until Milligan closed it on an 8-3 run. That run was highlighted by a kill by Codispoti and a couple of kills from Dockery.

At 4-4 in the third set, Milligan took the lead for good and once again finished the set strong. After trailing by as many as seven, Tennessee Wesleyan brought it to within two at 18-16, but the Buffs went on a run that included kills from Langford, Ricker twice, Codispoti, Rupert and Dockery in a span of eight points to help seal the win.

Geren earned 32 assists for the match, while Milligan's defense held TWU to an attack rate of .070.

Next up, Milligan will play another AAC match at Bryan College on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Buffs are back home on Saturday at 11 a.m. for a nonconference matchup with Kentucky Christian University.
