Langford, Geren reach milestones, but Buffs fall to Montreat

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 3, 2017) â€" Senior Marissa Langford set the kills record and sophomore Kellee Geren reached 2,000 career assists but the feats were bittersweet, as the Milligan College volleyball team dropped a tight five-set match to Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat College, 19-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 15-13, Tuesday evening at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
 
Langford, midway through the fourth set, broke the Milligan kills record which was previously held by Samantha Bruinius who played for the Buffs from 2013 to 2016. Bruinius finished her career with 1,445 career kills. With a match high 22 kills on Tuesday, Langford moved her career tally to 1,450. Langford added seven digs, two service aces, an assists, and she hit .275 for the match.
 
Whereas Langford set a school record, Geren reached a significant milestone with her 2,000th career assist midway through the third set. With 44 for the match, she moved her career total to 2,018. Geren also had 11 digs for a double-double, along with five kills and an ace.
 
Milligan led for much of the match, including going ahead one game to none and two games to one. After Montreat battled back in each case to tie, the two teams headed for a fifth set. Even still, Milligan jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the deciding set until a 7-1 run by Monreat saw the Lady Cavaliers storm back to tie it at 8-8.
 
The final pivotal run of the match came 10 points later with the scored tied 13-13, as Montreat won the last two points of the match to complete the season sweep.
 
Freshman Julia Codispoti had a big match, finishing with 10 kills to come one shy of her season high mark the second time she reached double figures in kills. Senior Alora Ricker finished with eight kills and 11 digs, while Julie Dockery had six kills and seven digs.
 
Milligan will be on the road for the next four matches, starting with an AAC match at new member Brenau University on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The next home match for the Buffs will be Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. against Kentucky Christian.
