Buffs play long ball in two wins at Martin Methodist

PULASKI, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2017) â€" Junior outfielder Ryan Young went deep three times to lead the Milligan College baseball team to two wins over Martin Methodist, 8-1 and 10-6, Friday night in a nonconference doubleheader.

Milligan (2-3) hit six home runs across the two games, including ones from Clayton Conner, Hunter Suggs and Juan Vasquez. Two of Young's homers came in game one and helped the Buffs put the series opener out of reach early. In the top of the first inning, he sent a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence, scoring Jascanel Ferreras and Nate Clifton to make it 3-0. An inning later, he sent a 2-1 pitch out to center, also a three-run shot, to make it 7-1.

Luke Spaulding and the Milligan defense held on from there, with Spaulding picking up his first decision of the season to improve to 1-0. Spaulding went four innings and allowed only one earned run on four hits. Cameron Sauls and Nathan Atkinson split the final three innings and shut the Red Hawks out on no hits and one walk. Sauls struck out two.

Conversely to the series opener, Young and the Buffs' offense came to life late in game two. After trading runs in the early innings, Milligan opened a 3-2 game up in the sixth inning when Julian Johnson doubled home two runs and three batters later Suggs smacked a three-run homer to left. That made it 8-2, and solo shots from Conner and Vasquez in the top of the seventh made it 10-2.

Martin Methodist tried climbing back by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Buffs held on for the 10-6 win. Chandler Daniels, Dustin Cole and Justin Morefield shared the workload on the hill. Daniels struck out four in 3.1 innings while Cole and Morefield struck out one apiece.

Weather pending, Milligan and Martin Methodist will close out the series on Saturday with a nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m. eastern time. The Buffs will have their home opener on Thursday, Feb. 16, when they host Northwood University on Anglin Field.
