MARS HILL, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2017) â€" Milligan College's softball team was defeated by Mars Hill University, 5-4, Wednesday evening on the road, falling victim to a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of game one of a scheduled doubleheader. Game two of the doubleheader was canceled due to rain.
ÂÂ
Kimberly Robinson,
Samantha Gosnell and
Jaclyn Jenkins shared the pitching duties, and things looked good for the Buffs early. They led 1-0 after their at-bat in the first, and led 4-2 after their at-bat in the fifth. However, Mars Hill rallied with two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the fifth to answer Milligan on both occasions. The loss was Milligan's fourth straight and dropped the Buffs to 3-4 this season.
ÂÂ
Robinson and Jenkins had nearly identical stat lines inside the circle, both going three-plus innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs. Jenkins was dealt the loss after allowing a hit, a walk and two sacrifices in the final innings.
ÂÂ
At the plate,
Kayla Baker,
Rachel Coffey and
Madison Grindstaff each earned two hits. One of Coffey's hits was a two-run homer in the fifth which scored
Jenna Gilbert and made it a 4-2 game.
ÂÂ
Milligan's next game is scheduled for Saturday at North Greenville University, and the Buffs will also be home over the weekend, hosting Lees McRae College Sunday at 1 p.m. on Anglin Softball Field. Both dates will feature doubleheaders.
