WALESKA, Ga. (March 10, 2017) - A nine inning push fell short for the Milligan College baseball team on Friday night, as the Buffs fell 5-4 to No.24 ranked Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Reinhardt Eagles.ÂÂ
Milligan (9-12, 1-3 AAC) trailed from the start, surrendering four runs to the Eagles in the bottom of the opening frame. Reinhardt scored runs off of a sac fly, double, and triple to take control of the game.ÂÂ
Chandler Daniels came in to pitch for the Buffs in relief of starter Luke Spalding and was lights out. Daniels pitched four shutout innings with four strikeouts, one hit, and a pair of walks. While he was keeping the Eagles offense stalled, the Buffs could not generate any offense either and did not get on the board until late in the game.
In the top of the seventh, Milligan ended its drought and scored a pair of runs to cut the deficit in half. Juan Vasquez singled to lead off the inning and Chris Patterson sent him home with a two run home run over the left field fence. In the bottom half of the inning, Reinhardt responded with an insurance run in the form of a RBI single.
Trailing 5-2 going into the top of the ninth, the Buffs generated one final rally. Down to the team's last out, Clayton Conner doubled to deep left to score a pair of runs and cut the lead down to one. With the tying run at second, the Eagles forced a fly out to end the Buffalo threat and the game.
The series will resume with a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch of game one scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
