WALESKA, Ga. (March, 11, 2017) - After dropping game one in a tight 5-4 battle against the Reinhardt Eagles, the Milligan College baseball team rallied in games two and three on Saturday for a pair of wins and the team's first Appalachian Athletic Conference series win of the season. The Buffs shutout the Eagles 4-0 in game one and exploded for 14 runs in a 14-4 win in game two.
Milligan (11-12, 3-3 AAC) never trailed in either game, thanks to lights out pitching in game one and big bats in game two. Game one starting pitcher Austin Perry pitched a seven inning gem, allowing only two hits, no runs, and struck out nine Eagles. The majority of the Buffaloes' offense came in the top of the third inning, where they scored two runs and seized control of the game. Conner Clayton and Chris Patterson started the inning with back-to-back doubles, with Clayton scoring on Patterson's. Next batter, Juan Vasquez drove Patterson home with a RBI single and put the Buffs up 3-0. In the fifth inning, Thomas Miller singled to center field, scoring Ryan Young and giving Milligan its fourth and final run of the game.ÂÂ
Game two featured more resistance from Reinhardt (24-6, 4-2 AAC), but Milligan's offense was too much. In the first inning and after back-to-back singles from Jascanel Ferreras and Conner, Patterson launched the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for a three-run home run. The Buffs led 4-1 headed into the top of the fifth, when Conner hit the second Milligan home run of the day, a two-run blast over the left field fence. His home run was also on the first pitch.ÂÂ
Reinhardt responded with its biggest inning of the day. The Eagles' Matt Trawick hit a home run of his own and cut Milligan's lead to 6-4. The Buffs immediately retaliated with eight runs in the final two frames to take an insurmountable 14-4 lead. Six hits for the Buffs, along with three Reinhardt errors led to six runs in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Patterson and Conner both added to their productive days with a RBI each. The two combined for nine RBIs, leading the Buffs in both games.
The baseball team returns to action next weekend for another road AAC series, this one against the Montreat Cavaliers. First pitch of game one is scheduled for Friday, March 16, at 2 p.m.ÂÂ
