Baseball splits first two at Montreat

MONTREAT, N.C. (March 17, 2017) â€" The Milligan College baseball team split a three-game series-opening doubleheader against Montreat College Friday evening on the road. Milligan fell in game one 6-4 but bounced back with a 10-7 win in game two.

Chris Patterson hit two home runs on the day, smacking a three-run shot in the seventh inning of game one to spark a would-be comeback before hitting a two-run shot to help fuel the Milligan offense in the fifth inning of game two. Patterson's home run in game one made it a 6-4 game, and the Buffs followed in the inning by getting the tying run in scoring position.

Austin Perry got the start and went six innings with six strikeouts and no walks, but the junior suffered the loss as the Buffs were not able to push the tying run across. Jascanel Ferreras, Clayton Conner and Juan Vasquez each finished with two hits in the loss.

Jacob Littleton made the start on the hill in game two and had a similar line to Perry's, going six innings with six strikeouts. Littleton gave up six runs, only two of which were earned, in picking up the win. Justin Morefield closed out the seventh inning and earned the save.

Offensively, Ferreras led the Buffs with a 3-for-4 effort. He scored two runs and recorded an RBI. Patterson, Nate Clifton and Bryan Soto each tallied a pair of hits as Milligan scored its 10 runs on 12 hits in game two.

Milligan and Montreat will decide the series Saturday at 3 p.m. After that, the Buffs will play their next game next Friday at home when they welcome Point University to Anglin Field for the start of a three-game series.
