Buffs win two at Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 11, 2017) â€" Behind strong pitching from Kimberly Robinson in game one and a go-ahead two-run homer from Robinson in game two, the Milligan College softball team defeated Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Columbia College 6-0 and 7-3 Saturday afternoon on the road.

Robinson got the start in game one and shut down the Koalas from the very start, striking out eight across six innings while allowing only two hits. Milligan (8-11, 3-5 AAC) built up its lead in the second, third and fourth innings to put the game away, and Brianna Snyder closed out the seventh with three quick outs.

Kassi Butcher made the start in game two and despite a rocky first inning in which she gave up three runs, the sophomore settled in to limit Columbia to only the three runs over the first five innings. She picked up the win as Cayley Shoemaker threw the last two innings of scoreless softball.

Milligan cut back into the Columbia lead with two runs in the second to make it 3-2, and Robinson put the Buffs on top with a two-run homer in the third. It put the Buffs into the lead for good as they scored one more run in the fourth before rounding out the scoring with two runs in the fifth.

Kirstan Beaver paced Milligan's offense in both games, combining to go 6-for-6 with three runs on the day. She was 3-for-3 in each game.

Milligan's next game will be at home on Tuesday, March 14, when the Buffs host Bluefield College in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Milligan will then be home again the following Sunday, March 19.
