Softball swept at Point

WEST POINT, Ga. (March 8, 2017) â€" Milligan College's softball team suffered its second straight sweep on the road Wednesday afternoon, falling at Point University 4-3 and 5-0 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Milligan, which had started the season 3-0 and had recently won three games in a stretch of four, lost for the fifth straight time to drop its record to 6-11 (1-5 AAC) this season. Point (15-9, 5-1 AAC) continued its winning streak up to four games.

Milligan had the early lead in game one as Ashley Arnold singled home Erica Roller in the top of the second inning, then Kacie Skeen singled home Kirstan Beaver in the top of the third. The Buffs were ahead 2-0 until one run in the third and two runs in the fourth gave the Skyhawks the lead and forced the Buffs to respond. Cayley Shoemaker had the single this time, driving one up the middle to score Beaver to tie the game. However, Point answered in the bottom half with the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Kimberly Robinson made the start inside the circle in game one and went 4.1 innings with three hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and two strikeouts. She kept the Skyhawks hitless through the first two innings but ended up with no decision.

It was all Point in game two as the Skyhawks pushed two runs across in the fifth and three runs in the sixth as the only scoring in the ballgame. Kassi Butcher did most of the work inside the circle, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing only six hits and two earned runs, but she was dealt the loss.

Milligan will be back on the diamond for another AAC doubleheader on Saturday when the Buffs travel to Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The next home game for Milligan is scheduled for Tuesday, March 14.
