Softball splits with Tusculum in season finale

GREENVILLE, Tenn. (April 24, 2017) - The Milligan College softball team wrapped up regular season play on Monday in a nonconference doubleheader on the road at Tusculum College. Thanks to a 12 run inning, the Buffs won 16-12 in a game one shootout, but were shutout 8-0 in game two.

Milligan (18-19, 10-10 AAC) took control of game one early with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Rachel Coffey took advantage of runners on second and third and sent them home with a single to center field. In the top of the fifth, the Buffs added another pair of runs thanks to back to back RBI hits by Erica Roller and Kacie Skeen and led 4-1.

However, the Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the inning with six runs and took their first lead of the game.

Their lead did not last long, as Milligan exploded for 12 runs in the top of the sixth. Several Buffs were key in the offensive display. Kirstan Beaver recorded three RBI's, two singles, and two runs in that inning alone, while Kim Robinson doubled twice for three RBI's and scored two runs as well. Skeen added another pair of RBI's as well when she singled up the middle with runners on second and third.

Despite a late rally by Tusculum, there was no recovering from the 12 run sixth inning and the Buffs rolled to a 16-12 win. Kassi Butcher picked up the win in relief of Robinson, her fourth win of the year.

Game two did not go nearly as smoothly for Milligan, as the team did not save any offense for game two. Tusculum raced out to a six run lead in the first inning and set the tone for the remainder of the game. The Pioneers kept the Buffs off the board and only allowed three hits, leading to a 8-0 loss for Milligan.

The Buffs return to action in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament, scheduled to begin on Wednesday. No.7 seeded Milligan will take on No.2 Bryan in the opening round. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
