MILLIGAN COLEGE, Tenn. (April 9, 2017) â€" After
Nate Clifton drove in the game tying run in the bottom of the eighth,
Ryan Young finished the rally with a walkoff single to left field in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Milligan College baseball team to a 4-3 win over Bluefield College Sunday afternoon on Anglin Baseball Field.
ÂÂ
With wins of 11-3 and 10-5 on Saturday, Milligan completed the Appalachian Athletic Conference sweep to improve to 19-20 (9-9 AAC). Bluefield moved its record to 21-18 (7-11 AAC).
ÂÂ
Young was 1-for-5 on the day but came up with his only hit when the Buffs needed it most. With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Young singled over the head of the Bluefield shortstop and into left-center field to score
William Oliver from third. Oliver was in to run for
Jascanel Ferreras who led the inning off with a single through the right side, and
Andrew Copas and
Clayton Conner followed with base hits to load the bases. Copas' base hit came on a well-placed bunt down the first base line before Conner sent a flare into right field.
ÂÂ
In the previous inning, Clifton gave the Buffs a much needed run to tie the game at 3-3 when he tripled to left center with one out. It scored
Justin Pearson who was hit by a pitch in the preceding at-bat.
ÂÂ
Milligan scored first in the contest and did so right off the bat. Copas reached base on a walk in the second at-bat of the game, and Conner doubled him home two batters later to make it 1-0. After Bluefield tied it at 1-1 in the top of the third, Ferreras gave the Buffs the lead back by hitting his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.
ÂÂ
Bluefield responded with a run in the top of the fourth to tie it once again, and the two teams went through the seventh still drawn even at 2-2.
ÂÂ
Wyatt Richardson made the start on the hill for Milligan and pitched one of the best games of his career. He lasted eight innings, struck out four and walked only one while allowing only five hits. Bluefield only got two runs off the junior right-hander until an unearned run put the Rams into the lead in the top of the eighth. Clifton's triple took Richardson off the hook for the loss, but Richardson was still left with no decision.
ÂÂ
Dustin Cole, who entered for the ninth and pitched a perfect ninth on nine pitches, earned the winning decision.
ÂÂ
At the plate, Copas finished 3-for-4 while Conner was 3-for-5. Ferreras was 2-for-5, and four other Buffs had one hit. ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Next up for Milligan, the Buffs will be on the road for a nonconference doubleheader at Georgetown College on Wednesday. Milligan will be a home next weekend for an AAC series against Bryan College.
