Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball sweeps Columbia for second straight win

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2017) â€" Senior Marissa Langford connected for kills on her first 11 attack attempts on the way to 15 kills and a Milligan College win over Columbia College, 25-11, 25-20, 25-17, Saturday afternoon in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball action.

The win was Milligan's second straight AAC sweep as the Buffs had defeated Allen University at home Friday night, less than 18 hours prior. Similar to the win Friday, Milligan jumped out to an early lead over Columbia on Saturday and never seemed to be in any trouble. An 8-1 run, highlighted by three Langford kills, early in the first set extended an 8-4 Milligan lead to a 16-5 Milligan lead and the Buffs were on cruise control from there.

In the first set alone, Langford connected for kills on all seven of her attack attempts. Rebecca Maxwell had four kills on her first seven attempts, and Alora Ricker had four kills on her first eight. Sophomore setter Kellee Geren had 15 assists on 16 Milligan kills in first set, and the Buffs hit .433 as a team.

Milligan again got out to an early advantage with the first three points of the second game. Although Columbia battled back to take a small lead midway through the frame, a 9-2 Milligan run put the Buffs out front for good in the second set. Julie Dockery registered a solo block coming out of a timeout to help fuel the run as Milligan went on to take the second game, 25-20.

Langford connected for kills on her first four attacks of the second game to extend her streak out to 11 kills on 11 attacks to start the match.

Milligan won the first six points of the final game before using an 8-2 run midway through it to seal the victory. Columbia did answer with a 9-1 run late in the match but only managed to get within four at 17-13. Cali Weddle, Geren, Dockery and Julia Codispoti finished the match with the last four kills on Milligan's last four points.

Ricker, Maxwell and Dockery each finished behind Langford with six kills. Maxwell added 10 digs; Geren led with 36 assists; and Alyssa Rupert led with 15 digs.

Milligan will be home again on Tuesday, Sept. 19, for a 6:30 p.m. matchup with AAC foe Bryan College. It will be the final home match of September for the Buffs.
