Women's soccer falls to red-hot AAC leader in double OT

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Oct. 13, 2018) â€" For 108 minutes, the Milligan College women's soccer team battled even with the top team in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, but in the end, a goal with 1:14 left in double overtime dealt the Buffaloes a defeat to Truett McConnell University 1-0 Saturday.

FINAL MINUTES PROVE KEY
Milligan (5-6-1, 4-4 AAC) looked to snap Truett McConnell's (11-1, 9-0 AAC) eight-match winning streak and become the first team this season to shut out the Bears, but a goal from Jennifer McCall with 74 seconds left proved otherwise. McCall netted the winner on a counterattack along the right side after Milligan spent the last several minutes with all the chances. Truett's Jessica Lanier was credited the assist.

Milligan had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the match, and some of their best chances came in the closing minutes of the second overtime. The Buffs earned a couple of free kicks in their attacking third, followed by a corner kick from Ashlen Burch in the seconds leading up to McCall's golden goal.

BY THE NUMBERS
Truett outshout Milligan 46-10 (17-5 on shots on goal) in the contest. This saw goalkeeper Eva Bower record a new career high in saves with 16, breaking her previous mark of 13 which she set Sept. 1 at North Greenville. Truett also held the advantage on corner kicks at 9-2.

The match marked Milligan's fifth trip to overtime this season (0-4-1), and the fifth time the Buffs lost a match beyond the final eight minutes of regulation.

The win for Truett, which is receiving votes in the latest NAIA top 25 poll, extended its winning streak to nine matches during which time the Bears have allowed only one goal. They also now have allowed no goals in the last seven games and hold a two and a half game lead over the rest of AAC field.

UP NEXT
Milligan heads to Dayton, Tennessee, Saturday, Oct. 20, for an AAC matchup with Bryan College (5-7-1, 4-3-1 AAC). Bryan ranks ahead of Milligan in conference standing by half a game.
