Softball eliminated from AAC tournament

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (April 26, 2018) â€" Freshman Neelee Griffith recorded her 11th home run of her rookie season in an Appalachian Athletic Conference elimination game Thursday afternoon against Montreat College. The Buffs fell to the Cavaliers 4-3 to end their season 22-20 overall, 15-9 AAC.

Milligan got two runners on base while Morgan Overholser, an All-Conference first team selection, hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners enabling the Buffs' first run because of a Montreat error in the first inning. Nonetheless, the Cavs swung for a few singles pushing two runners home to put them in the lead for good (2-1). Montreat connected for another couple of hits to score another run in the second but Griffith matched the run with her homer in top of the third (3-2).

After another Cavalier run in the third and a scoreless fourth and fifth inning (4-2), Overholser doubled deep down the left field line while senior Rachel Coffey followed with a sacrifice bunt to score pinch runner Kayla Baker in attempt to spark a rally (4-3). However, Milligan's defense backed up by stellar pitching by Kassi Butcher held the Cavs hitless and scoreless in the sixth but it proved not enough as Montreat also went on to hold the Buffs hitless and scoreless in the seventh to advance to another round of the AAC tournament.

Cayley Shoemaker was saddled the lost after allowing four hits and three runs. Butcher pitched the remaining five innings allowing two hits, one run and striking out one. Savannah Nocera also tallied a hit alongside Griffith and Overholser.
