Buffs drop first AAC match

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 21, 2018) â€" In a battle of unbeatens in Appalachian Athletic Conference play Friday night, the Milligan College volleyball team (9-3, 3-1) faltered against Point University (11-7, 5-0) in five sets (25-11, 16-25, 29-27, 20-25, 10-15) inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. The loss ended the Buffaloes four match win streak and marked the third straight (fifth overall) game that has been decided in five sets for Milligan.

Elise Gregory recorded her third straight double-double with a match-high 21 kills and 22 digs to lead Milligan. Julie Dockery posted 16 kills on 30 attempts for a match-high .433 hitting percentage to go along with four blocks. Alyssa Gibson added to the offensive attack for the Buffs with 10 kills.

Kellee Geren racked up 51 assists, 16 digs and three blocks for her sixth double-double of the season. The 51 assists marked the second time this year that Geren has recorded 50 or more assists in a single match.

Alyssa Rupert anchored Milligan's defense with a team-leading 28 digs, while Layla Grant followed with 17 of her own.

Point was led by Tatiana Dale who finished with 16 kills and nine blocks.

Milligan took the first game in dominating fashion winning 25-11, as the defense held the Skyhawks to a -.147 hitting percentage. But, Point would respond with a strong second set to tie the match at one game apiece.

The third set was a game of runs between both squads as they traded the lead back-and-forth. Milligan would ultimately edge Point 29-27 on a kill from Gregory thanks to an assist from Cameron McConnell.

Milligan trailed by as much as seven points in the fourth, but made things interesting late with a 5-1 run to draw within three. Point would end up holding on to tie the match and send it to a fifth.

In the fifth and final set, the Skyhawks would close out the match on a 6-2 run for the victory.

UP NEXT
Milligan remains home for a Saturday matchup against the reigning regular season AAC champions, Reinhardt (RV), beginning at 11 a.m. Following Saturday's game, the Buffs will finish up their four game homestand with matches against Bluefield College (Tuesday, Sept. 25) and Montreat College (Thursday, Sept. 27).
