Late surge not enough as Buffs fall

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 22, 2018) â€" On a rainy Saturday night at Anglin Field, the Milligan College men's soccer team (4-3, 0-3) suffered their second consecutive defeat falling to Montreat 3-1 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match.

In a physical first half, both teams fired off seven shots each including three shots on goal, but Montreat was able to sneak one in through the post in the 14th minute to take an early 1-0 lead.

After the Cavaliers added a second goal in the 59th minute off of a deflection, Roberto Fernandez Garrido would put Milligan on the board after a great touch from Jordan Burch. Garrido's goal allowed him to retake the team lead with eight on the year.

The Buffaloes would make a strong surge late in an attempt to tie the match, but were unable to get one past Montreat's backline. The Cavaliers would add their third and final goal in the 90th minute to make the final tally 3-1.

BY THE NUMBERS
Overall, Milligan was outshot by Montreat 23-14, but each had eight shots on frame. Garrido led the Buffs with four shots including three on goal, while Robell Habte followed with three attempts (one on goal). Harry Griffin, Jordan Burch and Joel Dominguez each attempted two shots on the evening.

Keeper Luke Dove recorded five saves for the match. William Stallworth, Melle Rekvelt and Raphael Duarte scored the three goals for Montreat who is now 3-4-2 on the season (1-2-1 AAC).

UP NEXT
Milligan will head out on a three game road trip beginning with an AAC matchup against Point University Saturday, Sept. 29, at 5:30 p.m. The Buffs will also visit Bluefield and Lees McRae before returning home Wednesday, Oct. 10, for a game against St. Andrews.
